Federal rules require remodelers to be certified and trained to do it safely to make sure remodeling activities don’t spread lead dust.
There are additional state and local rules that remodelers have to follow to properly handle Lead when remodeling.
If you hire someone to renovate your pre-1978 home be sure to check to see that they are lead safe certified.
It is also very good idea to understand the rules to protect yourself and your family.
The reality of dealing with your remodeling project in a pre-1978 home is that the likelihood of the area having lead particles in it is really high.
Back then, Lead was essentially an additive to the materials back then to help with the durability of the product.
Upon learning through science and the reality we have today, if you stir up lead and these lead particles, they essentially become airborne. When they become airborne that’s when you inhale them.
Obviously you think about your family such as any toddlers running around, especially the lower you get to within their height range. A lead certified company such as ours will do these lead tests in multiple areas if need be, to rule out false negative tests especially when we think there is a good chance of lead being present in the remodel.
A good reason to have that done is a very likely scenario seen in pre-1978 Homes. They typically had some sort of remodeling done in the late 80s or 90s for a particular area. That previously remodeled area might be fine but it does not mean the untouched remodeling area you want done does not contain Lead.
We will wear gloves, a mask, and possibly safety glasses if we think it’s necessary just to obtain a test to find out if there’s any lead.
We use a new lead test kit, open it up, and we may break to shake the tester. Our goal is to make sure your area is not hot with lead. We will know pretty quickly via the test results.
If the remodeling area tests positive for lead, it now adds on extra steps to make sure no one gets sick during the remodel. We have to be very cautious. If we find a positive lead area, we can be pretty presumptuous that there are other lead spots where lead exists.
You need a good clean environment before a remodel.
Once we know where all the lead is located for your remodel, there are precautions that we need to take for everybody’s safety.
We will remove any furniture or items in the area. We will hang up a Lead hazard sign. We will wrap up and/or put up plastics. We will tape up and cover any vents, doors, windows and the floor to contain the lead or prevent lead from spreading.
We will wear lead protective suits to be extra cautious. You don’t want any of this lead dust spreading onto us or your own person and things.
Once demo is complete, laws require us to properly dispose the trash and to clean up the work area.
Federal rules have some really serious specific steps that we have to adhere by ensuring that we didn’t leave any lead dust behind. A simple example is wiping down surfaces and exposed areas with a disposable cloth, then repeating the process with another cloth until we see a cloth that is completely clean.
Now we can begin the demo for remodel. From there, we are good to go.
